Symphoniq Announces TrueView J2EE Diagnostics for Jboss

Milliman's Seattle Office effortlessly manages complex JBoss applications using existing staff

PALO ALTO, Calif., October 3, 2006 — Symphoniq® Corporation, which provides application performance management (APM) software for Web applications and services, today announced the extension of the TrueView J2EE Diagnostics software suite to include management for the popular JBoss open source Java application server platform.

Milliman's Seattle office is using J2EE Diagnostics for JBoss to automate the formerly manual and time-consuming process of triaging problems with custom Java applications, both in production and development environments.

"When you roll out complex, multi-tier applications, every piece of equipment lies between your user and the back-end database," said Sid Siegel, Director, Corporate Application Development for Milliman. "You need both real-time monitoring to know when there's an issue, and the ability to home in on the crux of the problem."

"Before TrueView, triaging Web problems was a manual, time-consuming process, which typically involved the development staff reviewing the log files on all the servers-three people spending hours investigating," said Siegel. "I realized I was going to have to hire another person or two if I wanted to get back to developing new applications! With TrueView, in less than 5 minutes, we can identify with a high degree of certainty where the problem resides."

Like earlier Symphoniq products for BEA WebLogic, and Microsoft .NET, TrueView J2EE Diagnostics for JBoss identifies the specific method calls and SQL queries that cause application performance problems, dramatically accelerating the process of problem resolution. This helps organizations deploy and manage new Web applications and services.

These new Web applications and services can provide better functionality, but can end up wasting resources if the developers have to spend all their time debugging problems rather than developing new applications.

"The Web lets us provide much better solutions for our consultants than the old client-server apps," said Siegel, "But the management is a lot more complicated. With client-server, you have a database and a client. It's much simpler, easier to solve. You don't have a user in Chicago connecting to a data center in Seattle, with transactions going through a Web server and app server to a database. With the Web, the number of pieces and moving parts is much greater."

Milliman has also deployed Symphoniq's TrueView .NET Diagnostics to manage .NET applications. Increasingly, companies (especially small to medium-sized businesses) need management tools that can handle both .NET and JBoss applications.

"Organizations are rapidly moving from the client-server model to Web applications and services to gain efficiencies and the flexibility to widely distribute complex applications more quickly," said Mark Driver, Research VP at Gartner. "The looming unknown is how they plan to manage these thousands of services, modules and components. Management capabilities have to be integrated into the application with the ability to reach from end-to-end and down into the stack."

"Our goal is to help our customers manage all their Web applications and services," said Hon Wong, CEO, Symphoniq Corporation. "Symphoniq's overall TrueView Web Management Suite now provides end-to-end application management solutions-based on real user traffic and transactions-for every major platform, including Microsoft .NET and open source JBoss."

Siegel added, "TrueView helps us be more proactive. As we're watching the application and its performance, and how all the components are operating, it helps us dissect the entire life of the transaction and gives us much better insight into where the performance issues lie."

Pricing and Availability

TrueView J2EE Diagnostics for JBoss is available now. Pricing starts at $20,000, depending upon configuration. Special developer pricing is also available.
